Oh hi 👋

Sinks in the bedroom, an argument for and against

Sinks in the bedroom, an argument for and against

Sinks in the bedroom are back. We know what you’re thinking, were they ever in? Yes! They were! Dating back to the 1800s, both basins and tubs were pretty common in bedrooms. And while modern renovations stripped them out, we’ve already seen tubs slowly creep back in. But why should we let them have all the fun?

Whether you love it or hate it, sinks in bathrooms are a trend that’s slowly filling our social media feeds (and our plumbing nightmares). If I’ve learnt anything from high school debate and Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in Joker, it’s the importance of hearing both sides of the story. So here’s a very fair and unbiased argument for and against sinks in bathrooms.

First the affirmative (that’s me!), discussing the pros:

Thanks to 2020, bedrooms are offices, kitchens are boardrooms, bathrooms are the only place we can get some peace & quiet. Unless you have a toddler. Or a cat. Our spaces have become more multifunctional than ever before. In the name of efficiency, adding a basin in your bedroom just makes sense.

2020 was also the year that reminded us to wash our grubby paws WAY more than we previously were. The bedroom sink gives us one more place to wash our hands. Isn’t that handy?

Finally, the sheer convenience of it. Already in bed but forgot to brush your teeth? No stress! Have 9 more skincare steps to do but someone is taking their sweet time on the loo? We see you! Want a glass of water at 3 am but convinced your hallway is haunted? Problem solved! This reason alone has me Googling the closest bathroom shop and picking my preferred tiles (baby blue).

Now the negative (also me!), discussing the cons:

First it was baths, now it’s basins. What’s next, a toilet next to your bedside table? Once we start combining all our rooms into one, walls will become obsolete. Oh, the anarchy! Let’s keep our bathrooms as bathrooms and our bedrooms as bedrooms.

Who do bedrooms think they are anyway, creeping on bathroom territory? If we had it our way, we’d remove the bed and install a bath instead as we slowly attempt to turn every room into a bathroom (the superior room). Living room, you’re next.

Are you like me and wash your face like you have bear paws for hands? Think of all that water splashing onto the carpet or floorboards. Now think of years of water seeping into the carpet or floorboards. What are you gonna mildew about it?

Finally, people will definitely wee in them.

Ok, that’s enough arguing with myself for one day. It’s your turn to weigh in. Comment below what you think about sinks in bathrooms. Love it? Hate it? Or hate to love it?
