Garden with Toilet Paper Rolls

“Reduce, reuse, recycle” might be one of our unofficial mottos, but let's be real—sometimes, reducing the amount of toilet paper we use is sometimes not an option. So what to do with those naked rolls and paper packaging? Recycling is the obvious choice, when the recycling bin's overflowing and the garbage truck won't come for another five days, it's time to get creative with reusing. Give me any excuse to get crafty, and you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll take it.

We’ve already turned our finished toilet paper rolls into smartphone speakers, Christmas crackers, and stamps. So, what’s next? Gardening accessories obviously!

Seeding Starters: Planning with TP Rolls

Many plants dislike being disturbed once they start growing… they’re basically teenagers. Transporting them from small pots to bigger beds can mean transplantation shock and root damage. Toilet paper rolls make great starter pots for seedlings and even act as biodegradable planters. When your beans, peas, or carrots are ready to move into the garden (or their roots start peeking out of the bottom), plant the whole roll in the soil. It’ll break down naturally, leaving no trace.

Pest Control: Bug Barriers with TP Rolls

Pesky bugs like moths are known to lay eggs in the stems of certain plants; while cutworms are often guilty of gnawing at healthy seedlings. Toilet paper rolls can act as a protective shield for your seedlings, stopping nosy bugs from getting too close. For moth protection, cut your toilet paper roll in half, wrap it around the base of your plant with it, and tape it shut. It’s like putting your seedling in a tiny fortress! Mama moth has no chance of getting in now. For cutworms, create collars by cutting your rolls 3-inch lengths, and placing them around the base of each plant. Your garden babies will be safe and sound.

Origami Flowers: Crafty Creations for Urban Gardeners

Living in a tiny apartment in a concrete jungle? Same! Gardening may not be a viable option for you, but that doesn’t mean you should be excluded from our crafty outdoorsy activities. Here’s an idea: make your very own tulip garden! Simply keep the paper packaging of each toilet paper roll. Spend a rainy afternoon crafting on your living room floor, and voila—you’ve got yourself a vibrant indoor flower garden!
