Plant Paper vs Hello Tushy: How Does Their TP Compare?

When it comes to comparing environmentally friendly toilet paper options, the devil is in the details. Brands like Plant Paper or Hello Tushy promise to shake up your bathroom game, but do they really deliver?

Whether it’s softness, durability or sustainability you’re after, we’re here to help. Let’s separate the sheet from the chaff, and figure out if either of these eco-contenders are worthy of your roll call.

What is Plant Paper?

Since 2016, Plant Paper has been rolling out eco-friendly bathroom staples that ditch harmful chemicals like bleach, formaldehyde and PFAS. Made from 100% FSC-certified bamboo, their rolls blend eco-friendliness with functionality.

Their packaging keeps it simple and smart with a minimalist cardboard design, complete with a built-in handle to make it that much easier to bring sustainability into your bathroom.

What are the benefits of Plant Paper?

Plant Paper has built its reputation on one big promise: delivering eco-friendly toilet paper and tissues that feel just as good as traditional options, but with a far lighter environmental impact.

Their standout claims include larger sheets, a thicker, more absorbent 3 ply design, and a double-sided embossing pattern that they say sets a new standard for softness. And the cherry on top? 100% plastic-free packaging.

The NRDC seems to agree they’re onto something — the international environmental advocacy group that rates companies' sustainable efforts awarded Plant Paper a B+.

What are the downsides of Plant Paper?

Plant Paper skips individual wrapping in favour of naked rolls. While this reflects their eco-conscious ethos, it could be a dealbreaker for those who prefer a more hygienic or polished look in their bathroom setup.

Another factor? The price. Plant Paper clocks in at almost 20 cents more per sheet than many other sustainable brands, which adds up over time. And for those just wanting to give it a try, there’s no free shipping on single purchases — so be ready to make a bit of an investment.

What is Hello Tushy?

Since their founding in 2015, Hello Tushy (also known as Tushy) have made a name with their bidets, but they've since set their sights on making an even bigger splash in the whole bathroom. Their product lineup now includes bamboo toilet paper, cleaning solutions and even scented bathroom products.

True to their mission of improving health and dignity, Hello Tushy has partnered with Samagra, a nonprofit building community toilets in India, helping to create safer, cleaner spaces for folks in need.

What are the benefits of Hello Tushy?

Hello Tushy’s 3-ply bamboo toilet paper rolls are unbleached, BPA- and ECF-free, designed to keep things healthy for you and the planet.

Tailored to pair with Tushy bidets, these rolls are made to absorb water while maintaining their strength and comfort. The brand even claims you’ll only need two squares per use — a claim we’ll just let you test for yourself.

And for those who cringe at cardboard cores, Tushy’s got you covered. Their facial tissue style no roll option ditches the traditional design in favour of individual sheets, cutting down on waste.

What are the downsides of Hello Tushy?

Hello Tushy’s pack sizes are limited to just 8 or 36 rolls, making it a tricky match for households that fall somewhere in the middle.

And while their no roll option promises less waste, there's a catch: it’s designed to be used with a proprietary dispenser stand — meaning extra cost and less space in your bathroom.

Performance reviews are mixed, too. One disgruntled customer says “The minute it gets wet, your hands get wet too — even if you double up.”

On the service side, Hello Tushy has over 20 complaints on the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with customer service cited as a common issue. And while the brand markets itself as eco-friendly, the NRDC graded Hello Tushy's sustainable efforts a D, citing a lack of FSC certification.

What’s the price per roll of Hello Tushy vs Plant Paper paper?

Deep breath — here come the numbers (or you can just skip down to the handy chart).

For a one time purchase, the price per roll for Plant Paper is $1.72, calculated from $165 for 96 rolls. The price per roll for Hello Tushy is $1.92, based on $69 for 36 rolls*.

But since Plant Paper includes 200 sheets per roll and Hello Tushy has 300, it’s probably best to line them up according to their price per 100 sheets. Plant Paper costs $0.86 per 100 sheets for a one time purchase, while Hello Tushy provides a more economical option of $0.64 for the same purchase type.

When you factor in the cost savings on subscription purchases, Plant Paper gives an approximate 9.1% discount, while Hello Tushy offers around an 11% discount.

Regarding sustainability, Plant Paper holds a higher NRDC sustainability rating with a B+, compared to Hello Tushy's D. Obviously, Plant Paper is far more environmentally friendly based on the NRDC criteria.

The verdict: Plant Paper vs Hello Tushy

So who's the better roll model?

Hello Tushy’s price advantage is tough to ignore. But while it offers a bigger bang for your buck, considering Hello Tushy’s sustainability score, the environment might ultimately be footing the bill.

For softness and durability, Plant Paper takes the crown, while Hello Tushy scores points for its polished presentation and sanitary storage options.

So, who gets your vote? It all comes down to what matters most: spending or sustainability, comfort or convenience. The right roll is the one that fits your priorities.

Conclusion: Sustainable toilet paper for the win

Plant Paper scores high marks for softness and durability, though its premium price and lack of free single shipping might be a stretch for budget-conscious shoppers. Their 100% plastic-free packaging is a win for sustainability, but skipping individual wrapping might leave some questioning its shelf appeal.

Hello Tushy keeps things more affordable with stylish packaging, but it’s not without drawbacks — users report less than stellar absorbency and its sustainability scores compared to Plant Paper lag behind.

But what if you didn’t have to choose between the price, the plush or the planet?

Who Gives A Crap offers bamboo and recycled toilet paper that’s soft, strong and sustainable — and with 50% of profits going to clean water initiatives, your purchase supports a great cause while looking great on your shelf.
