Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Who Gives A Crap: Chapter 5

Our DEI Council is in full swing – tackling problems, finding solutions and having really great conversations. Here’s our quarterly update from our four task forces.

If you’re just joining us, we’ve been documenting our journey to becoming an actively anti-racist business since June 2020. You can catch up on chapters 1-4 here.

From the Hiring and Representation task force

We collected internal demographic data from our leadership team to create a baseline and prioritise diversity for current and future leadership roles. We have also upgraded our hiring platform to collect applicant demographic information to mitigate bias and improve our recruitment process. We are continuing to incorporate this data tracking through all of our systems. In the next quarter, we will be exploring bias training programs for our team as well as reviewing and improving our hiring process based on the work we’re doing. - Brian

From the Professional Development task force

Last quarter, we focused on creating more equitable, inclusive opportunities for our whole team to take part in company-wide conversations. We designed and piloted a live anonymous Q&A forum to dig into our 5 year vision & FY22 strategic plan, which resulted in some really diverse & engaging discussions. We also launched our DEI suggestion box that’s accessible to everyone in the business and managed by the council.

This coming quarter, we’re aiming to launch leadership open hours, where team members wanting to collaborate, seek advice or give feedback are matched with a leader in the business for an informal working session. - Megan

From the Foundation and Inclusion task force

Last quarter's goal was to give people more opportunities to share their journeys with the wider team. We hosted a conversation series and film club that invited people to share their thoughts and stories in a safe space.

We also observed Juneteenth encouraging our US team to take the day off to reflect and learn through resources such as books, movies, and articles. We also invited the team to participate in a micro-training called “From Allyship to Anti-Racism.”

This quarter, we’re launching Donut, an app that randomly pairs groups of team members together from across the globe to get to know each other better and connect on a personal level. - Mary

From the External and Brand task force

It's been a busy time in the External and Brand task force. We've been working on our “Things We're Willing to Fight for” statements, but we didn't want these to just come from the top. So we started by asking our team what they truly gave a crap about (no surprises, but we're a passionate bunch). We used our team's responses to start crafting our values statements, which we'll use as our internal guiding principles. We've loved seeing everyone here at Who Gives A Crap getting involved and are looking forward to sharing these final statements with the wider team! - Kate
