Our lawyer’s favourite crafts
Meet Kate. She’s the in-house lawyer at Who Gives A Crap. She’s not like just any lawyer though, she’s crafty. Really, really crafty (and super generous with her time). When she’s not writing in top legal publications and running our legal department, Kate likes to make stuff...out of the stuff she already has. We think that’s pretty cool and had a feeling that you’d think so too. So without further ado, take it away, Kate!
Despite lawyers sometimes having a reputation for being a little, ahem, dry, I’m a creative person at heart. Particularly during lock down, crafts have been a great way to kill some time spend some quality time with my kids. And when you start looking, there are a bunch of things around the house that can be repurposed into something pretty amazing
Don’t train on my parade
This one has a double benefit. You have the fun of making the train and then hours of fun actually playing with it!
All you need is a few empty boxes, some inner tubes and some ribbon. We decorated ours with our colourful toilet paper wrappers, but you can choo-choo-choose whatever you want when it comes to decorations!
The sky is the limit
I had this great idea of making a paper mache hot air balloon with my children. They lost interest after the first 15 minutes, which meant I was the one that added layer by layer over the next few weeks. They then, of course, came in at the end with all the glory and painted the finished product!
What you need:
Paper strips. This can be newspapers or old magazines. We used our toilet paper wrappers cut into strips
Glue made of equal parts flour and water
Balloon
Milk carton
Blow up a balloon and cut the top off the milk carton. Cover both with the strips of paper soaked in glue. Once it’s dried, rinse and repeat until it’s thick and sturdy enough. Once it’s ready, pop the balloon and you’ll have the hot air balloon ready for decorating!
Happy birthday tiss-you
As we haven’t been able to celebrate birthdays in person, we have embraced the art of card making. Turns out our tissue boxes are perfect for this! Choose any picture you’d like, and voila - a beautiful personalised card!
The hair necessities
I’ve come to the conclusion that hair clips must be able to clone themselves. We never seem to buy them, but there are always so many of them floating around!
We were trying to work out how to store them when the glass in a picture we had broke. I took the frame and, using some ribbon that we had in the house and a staple gun, we now have somewhere to store the ever increasing number of hair clips.
I like big books and I cannot lie
Imagination is something that we should encourage, not only in children, but also as we grow up. A really fun way to do this is to write stories! Our wrappers are brilliant for making books, and then the colourful side can be used for the pictures!
Here comes the sun(flower)
We had some empty coffee jars that were super pretty and we’d planned on using them for the Lego flower set that is on our wishlist. A few weekends ago, we had a rainy day and decided to make our own flowers out of Who Gives A Crap wrappers. A quick google for ‘easy paper flowers’, a glue stick, some scissors and a pencil and we have some pretty, if rather unconventional, flowers!
