After 3 delightful years, we made the tough decision to close our sister brand, Good Time. To dig into why (and celebrate the, well, good times) we had a chat with Danny and Hannah, the Co-founder and General Manager of Good Time.
How does it feel to be closing this chapter of Good Time?
Hannah: You know, it’s bittersweet. We built something awesome and it’s not closing because we failed. It’s closing because we had to make some really hard business decisions that prioritise our impact. So, I'm a little sad, but I'm also proud and grateful to work for a company that chooses to invest where it will most benefit people.
Danny: I just feel proud. It was really freaking hard to start Good Time. It required a lot of dedicated effort from a lot of people – a lot of time, energy and creativity. And I'm really proud of us for doing it. It would have been easier not to do it. We've learned a tonne along the way that I think will make our core business, Who Gives A Crap, better and stronger.
What was the decision process like to close down Good Time?
Danny: We were looking across the business and seeing a lot of people stretched thin across a lot of different things. We were having some hard conversations about the areas of the business that are creating disproportionately high or low impact and had disproportionately high or low impact on the team capacity. Ultimately, we want to help end the sanitation crisis. That’s our main mission as a company. And to do that well, we felt like we had to focus on the part of the business that was having the most impact, and that’s our core brand, Who Gives A Crap.
Looking back, what’s your favourite Good Time memory?
Danny: The first thing that comes to mind was when I tried to change the brand name to “Moist.” Just seeing the look on Hannah's face…
Hannah: The Moist conversation is up there for me as well. Actually no, it was when I was on a plane to Colorado and I was literally taking off when I got a call to tell me that we’d won the Allure Best of Beauty and I was so stoked. I was sweating with excitement on the plane and then when I landed, I saw that I had five missed calls. I was like, "Oh no, it was a mistake.” And there was a mistake – we’d actually won two awards, not just one. So then it was double exciting.
Incredible. Any final message for the Good Time customers?
Hannah: Thank you! Thank you for being on the journey and especially thank you to anyone who tried something new. Using bars for your hair or face might have felt scary, but it was so cool to see this community of people rally together to do better for the planet.
Danny: Yes, Thank you to everyone who trusted us and gave us a shot. It's pretty remarkable to think of how much plastic waste we've avoided and, of course, also the donations we've helped generate. We couldn’t have done that without our amazing customers.
So now it’s goodbye.
Danny: It is! But before we go, I just want to give a shout out to the team. There were moments that were really hard, but our team was really passionate about this brand. They rolled up their sleeves and did what had to be done. And I think those moments were really rewarding. So I'm super grateful for the team who put their heart into Good Time.
Hannah: Totally. The team made it really fun to work on this and it was inspiring to be around people who are so passionate.
Now big question - was it a good time?
Hannah: Honestly, it was a really, really good time.
Danny: It was really freaking hard, but yes! It was.
